Madmike:
Your message came through on the second try. I don't know why it seemed to you it hadn't. Welcome to theForge!
Your English is a great deal better than my French. I understand you with no problem.
(Yes, you mean "casting" or "cast iron".) Cast iron can be suitable for an anvil, provided it's topped by a steel plate. However, for a junkyard fabrication like you're making, you're probably better off with steel.
If you don't know about spark testing of iron and steel, ask! You can easily tell the difference between cast iron and steel using a grinder.
Best of luck,
Bruce

Hope this time it will work, my first mail didn't...

Hi everybody,

I read this letter since about 6 months now, a bit shy I didn’t wrote
before, but have found many answers in your words. So let’s introduce
myself, I’m Madmike, a French horse farrier (I’ve stopped, tired of driving
3 hours a day) turning to blacksmithing and bladesmithging. I’m
‘junkyarding’ the parts to build up an air hammer and have found a forklift
counterweight coming from the smallest ‘gasoline’ motorised ones. I’m
wondering what kind of material is used to make these ‘so desired one big
block’ and how much it could weight (to size up the trailer I need to
borrow). I hope it’s not ‘casting’ (I hope casting is what I mean, this
fantastically brittle black stuff used to make stoves or heavy pans) as I
doubt it could kiss a 160lbs ram 200 times a minute . I’ve read somewhere
here that Frosty (if my memory is good) would have used one if he had found
one so I imagine it can do the trick.

Well I Hope my rusty English is still good enough to be understood, I wish
you a nice day.

Madmike.
