One safe finish for food-contact items is made from polyunsaturated
cooking/salad oil. Smear on a THIN layer and heat in an oven to 400F
for one hour. Oil turns dark brown (almost rust-colored), but looks
shiny black on black iron.

Speaking of finishes...
What about finishes for items that will come in contact with food,
like wiener roasting forks, roasting pokers, etc.?
