That's when you want live PTO ... my 35 MF has both ground driven and live.  Some trees will still choke me down but I can usuallg get the clutch in quick enough not to stall out.

That's almost true.  My little 1948 Fergie TE20 will drive over some small trees that the brush hog  gets choked on.  When the brush hog blades won't turn, the tractor won't go and I can't raise the mower.  So, I have to unhook the PTO shaft from the brush hog before I can raise the deck or go anywhere.
 
It's all part of the fun of vintage equipment.

I'm probably a little rough on my brush hog.  Dad taught me that if you can drive over (through) it with the tractor, the brush hog will handle it.  So far that's been true but it really makes a noise.

Don't try this with one of those light finish mowers.
