It might be worthwhile to contact Jack Andrews
(skipjack394 at mchsi.com) directly.  He may have the
original photograph and be able to interpret better
how it was done.

Looking at the book, it looks to me like not only the
"twisted" top and bottom pieces, but the entire side
sheet is wrapped around the corner (dog-headed) posts.
 I suspect that the top and bottom edges of the sides
are wired-edges (wire with metal wrapped around), but
that the "spiral" design was achieved by chiseling
before wrapping.  I could be very wrong about this.

In any even, you have my respect for seriously
considering executing a piece like this.  It's way
above my head.
