Add NITOL (95% alcohol with 5% Nitric acid) must be made fresh for each use.
Also ferric chloride is most effective mixed about 3 pts H2O to 1 pt FeCl3 
when you preheat solution to about 140 F. and frequently clean off the oxide 
residue with a cloth soaked in warm water and dawn detergent..

Okay, how about a little discussion about the pros and cons of the many 
different solutions that seem to be used for etching Damascus.  So far I 
have run across the following:

ferric chloride
ferric chloride mixed with white vinegar
murriatic acid
sodium bisulfate (worked for me)
sulfuric acid

I'm sure there must be more, and good reasons for using or not using them 
all.
