basically, an oval may or may not be developed from a mathmatical
equation. an ellipse is always developed from a mathmatical equation.

the common chicken egg in 2 dimensions is an oval. no mathmatical
equation has been found to describe the shape of a chicken egg.
the same is true in 3 dimensions.
