Hi Ries,

I know the optimal is to bolt it down to something sold like a table or
wall, but I have limited space. I also end up moving it all around to meet
my needs.

depends how hard you hit it.
You can stand on it, while you are whacking- that ought to help a bit.
But really, I just read an old lady, 72 years old, in China, has been
pulling semi's around with her teeth- so a strapping young guy like you,
hitting something with a big hammer, should be able to get several tons to
move.
In most instances, my guess would be the big plate would be fine.
But in extreme situations, nothing beats bolting it down to a concrete slab.
