You might want to take a look at Chuck's Bladesmithing Anvils. 
Adjustable height, square top. No horn or hardy hole, but then those 
were late period anyway. <grin>

I'm no longer in a 'chair, but when I was, about 20 inches was the 
right height for hitting. About 2 or three inches higher than the 
seat of the chair. Of course I couldn't remove the armrest on my chair.
