Lon,

I made a cut-off hardie out of s7 a couple years ago and had a lot of
trouble with the edge chipping.  Originally I had tempered it to a blue,
which with most steels would be too soft, but with the s7 it was still too
hard.  I finally ended up temtering it with a tourch until it was a dull
red. That seems to have solved the chipping problem. Now it's a great
hardie, really holds an edge.

I would be concerned about a knife made of s7 being too brittle.  Having a
heat treat oven or salt bath may be required to get a blade right.

its been years since i have made a knife from jack hammar bits but i had a
friend give me brand new bits so i know they are fracture free and good to
froge into knives any one know the crit temp for the s7 s5 steels.  and i
have spent conciderable time on the web looking for the chart for the steel
but it seems to be harder to find than a morrel in the spring
