Not into hydrogen and oxygen, but into WATER and oxygen.

Actually, my vote is for the new 'secret rocket fuel', namely butyl
rubber and laughing gas.  That's what Spaceship One was powered by. 
Maybe we could use old tires for the rubber!  And I've been reliably
informed that you can use laughing gas and still retain a security
clearance!

Does anyone remember those rocket packs from the 70's?  I thought, but
could be wrong, that they used hydrogen peroxide and platinum to
dissassociate the H2O2 into H2 and O2,  the increase in volume was what
caused those things to have lift.  Just a thought.
