Hi Ray, The 3:1 rule of upsetting applies to drawing rectangular stock as well. You'll spend more time drawing out the width than the thickness.
In other words you'd have better luck drawing out 3/8 x 1 than you would 1/4 x 1 as it will compress upon itself better in the core of the material than the 1/4" will as it tends to "dogbone" in shape at the edges instead of actually moving into the center material.
Therefore with 1/2 x 2 you'd get by - but selecting 3/4 or 5/8 x 2 would actually be easier on drawing out.....especially with a power hammer when getting into those heavier materials.

Hi People!
After all these years I come to realize I have never drawn rectangular bar stock. Round, square, but not rectangular.
I don't want to wast a bunch of material on trial and error for an urgent project.
The bar stock is 1/2" x 2".
