The other option is to go to 3/8 if the customer is requesting a "heavy looking strap" - then the 3/8 although harder to wrap tight than the 1/4 is still possible with an inner pin and swage of appropriate size to clean up the wrap.

why not the whole hinge out of a hammered 1/4 x 2. You are gaining nothing
in strength if the hinge leaves the barrel at 1/4, if anything you are
loosing it by putting that much more weight out there for the barrels to
support. Seems a bit odd to me.
