A friend was at my shop yesterday and told me he had a similar experience
with a wire wheel; wire slung off, penetrated his jeans and his left....He
said that made a case for leather aprons.

He probably would have stopped after the next layer....
Life is full of learning experiences, the sparks from a grinder will burn 
through leather if concentrated in the same spot long enough.
