Yeah, the timber wolf display at the airport and the grizzly bear next to
the Sears store elevator were about the only impressive things in Anchorage
the only time I was ever in that town (short contract in 1984).

I worked steel, aluminum, and piping, for the fishing fleet; mostly for
Arctic Ice from 1985 to 1991: Lots of near misses; many memories; rapid
aging. Like they say "it's not the years--it's the miles. No regrets,
though.

Yeah, it doesn't get much worse than the Bearing Sea. What did you do there?

I've been there but didn't stay longer than drilling a few holes took. We
flew in and out and stayed on the islands to boot.

The whole outdoors indoors thing has a lot to do with how remote and how
dangerous your indoors are. Sitting in the cab of a Nodwell in zero
visibility with a 70+ wind blowing through the poor weather stripping 15
miles from the road in a Copper River Delta blow is good for the same
feeling. <grin> The entire trick to surviving of course is DON'T GET OUT!!!

You'd be surprised just how resourceful people can be about being bored.
There are people who move to Anchorage, Fairbanks, etc. and never go
anywhere. I used to know a gal who was born in and lived in Anchorage all
23-24 years of her life (mid 70's) and had never been out of the city. For
reference you could drive across Anchorage the long way in under 15 mins.
during rush hour in the mid 70's.
