[TheForge] soldering, etc (OT, now seattle)

JRF,
If you are going directly to the manufacturer, you have the opportunity to
try and talk with their R & D people; with some companies, the head of sales
and the head of R & D are one and the same. It is just possible that you
could work something out with them to provide you with a large enough sheet
of their #shade #1 or #2 plastic to build your own shield. You would then
need to thermoform it to the desired shape (this is not very hard for a
simple curve).

I would not even suggest this course normally, but the filter lenses they
sell are merely an update for one of their auto-darkening welding helmets,
and so I doubt that they will "jealously guard" the secret of where the
material comes from or what it is. They may even see your idea as a new
sales opportunity. Good luck, and let us know how things turn out for you.
Mikey
