[TheForge] soldering v brazing v welding (fyi)

Aubrey,
No, the only official distinction is the liquidous temperature, but they do
go into other differences, such as inter-penetration, and aggression with
different alloys. If you have a specific question, I have been making
something of a study on the subject of joining, since that is what book two
is all about.

At least one other fella round here knows a bit too, 'cause I saw him trying
to awaken interest in phase diagrams; no doubt he'll keep me honest :) Not
that phase diagrams aren't interesting, if you're an engineer. Its kind of
like math, you know math teachers are sooo lonely. I can make people's eyes
role up in their heads, but only with burner talk--we all go a little crazy
sometimes :-)

Mikey,
That looks like a good resource, when I get time.... Do they distinguish
between brazing and soldering in a way that is significantly different than
the 840*F melting point of the filler metal?

Aubrey (who raised the question originally)

JRF
Harris (of torch equipment fame) makes a poor source for enlightenment about
joining processes (good enough source for filler alloys though). This is the
first time I've ever seen the term "coalescence" used that way. The usual
description is "metallurgical bond" and the process is called diffusion. I
would recommend you try Handy & Harmon's Brazing Book On Line if you want a
quick soldering/brazing education: http://www.brazingbook.com/
I'm afraid you have to register with them nowadays, but it is worth the few
minuets of your time. These guys actually know what they are talking about.
