[TheForge] source for 440A flats - knife stock

Not a silly question at all. 440C is what most people use now for
knives because it is much easier to find, and because they dont
purchase enough to buy a heat of steel. 440A is more easily forged
(more forgiving of temperature variation) because it has a slightly
lower carbon content. Back when the US actually manufactured goods here
in the states, you could purchase at least 5 different analysis of 440
(A,B,C, F, FMSe or FM) depending on how you were making the part;
forged, machined, cold headed, etc. No longer the case unfortunately.
The reason 440C is available today is because of the bearing industry.
If they start making bearings from something else, "C" will disappear
also.

Just a silly question. Why do you want 440 A and not
440 C that most people use?
Lynn (good for one silly question daily)
