The biggest difference for non-profits is that they don't have to pay 
taxes.  They definitely run their operations with an intent to bring 
revenues to the bottom line.  These can then be used to reinvest in the 
business or bonus to the officers and employees.  I have even know 
officers of non-profits who managed to sell the businesses, usually by 
owning the property separately and selling it at an inflated price to 
cover the value of the business.  I must admit I have known more 
operators using the non-profit status for personal reasons than for 
altruistic ones.  course I probably ran in the wrong circles.  :-)
