My opinion - 3/8th ought to be fine, sheet metel no but you ought'a be good 
with 3/8th. Be honist 1/2 inch sounds like overkill, and heavy to boot. As to 
the size of the pot, depends on what you burn - bigger for charcoal smaller for 
coal and I understand smaller still for coke - never used it myself. Anyway 
it's easier to stick something inside to make it smaller than it is to make it 
bigger.
