In this case, it's probably more of a middle ear problem since a
hammer and anvil are involved.
At one of the conferences in early days of the smithing revival, some
european smiths were affronted that N. American smiths started to
learn the craft in their 20s or even 30s. The Old Geezer Brits said
you hadda apprentice at 14. Some Germans said you must finish
technische Hochschule in metalwork design and then do some journeyman
time. One of the British conference demonstrators -- thus a smithing
demigod pro tem -- said, "Too young, too young!" so of course someone
asked him when he started. "Fooorrrty-foiiive!" was the reply.

The life so short, the craft so long to learn.

You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach
him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning
process as long as he lives.
