Don:

Copper forges pretty easily hot or annealed cold. As
Roger O. says if you're making very much change in
cross section, working hot is best. Dull red is a good
temp and listen and feel for it to work harden, the
cues are easy to read after the first time you push it
too far.

As Roger D. says grounding rod is copper clad steel.
Stay away from electrical bus bar as it contains
beryllium and is pretty toxic. It's best to buy new and
not run the risk of using scrap unless you're positive
of what it is.

In short, copper is a joy to forge, forgiving to work
and beautiful with almost any finish.

If it ain't forged
it ain't real.
Wrought iron is.
