there are a variety of ways.....but a good low tech approach is to  
fire up your Ox/acet torch............Just the acet. and soot up the  
piece of aluminum. Then add the oxygen to the  
flame...........remember that aluminum is a great heat sink, and keep  
in mind the thicker parts......... but as you run the flame over the  
aluminum, the soot burns off at the correct temperature. You can then  
either work the material hot or hose it down and work it annealed.
Like I said there are other ways too...but this will get you started.  
Copper........heat to soft red.....and quench or let it  
cool........viola.
