I hope you don't get rid of your coal/coke forge entirely... I have a
propane forge that really like and use almost exclusively, but I still
wish I had a coke forge for upsetting and some other things. The problem
with upsetting using a propane forge is that it gets the whole piece
hot, and not just the ends.

I was thinking that I could just stuff the stock in a hollowed-out
firebrick with the end poking out, so maybe it's not such a big deal...
But I haven't tried it yet.

Also, it would be nice to have a coal/coke forge so I don't feel like
such an idiot trying to forge with it at CBA events.

When I started to blacksmith I used a Coke forge. I lived In
Phoenix,AZ. It
has lots of anti- pollution laws there. I liked the coke forge but I

finally got a propane forge and have liked it ever since. I can put a
load of
steel in it and keep it hot and work the pieces as they get hot
without
having to worry about some "Pollution Cop" knocking on my door for
adding smoke to
the air. Plus I can turn down the heat to keep my pieces hot and not
having
to worry about them getting to hot. The propane forge will hold heat
for
awhile if I shut it off and is ready to work in about 5 minutes.
Best part of it I down get coal dust up the nose or lungs. I don't like
or
want Black lung disease.
