I think I missed something. The vapor in the cylinder is air. Compress
it and the oxygen density goes up as the compression heats the tinder.
Frankly, I find the idea impressive that this could start a fire, but
anyone who's used a bicycle hand pump knows they get hot.
There may be a question of ignition temperature. Some materials will
ignite at quite low temperatures, and obviously that would be an
advantage. Maybe there'd be a small range of ignition temperatures
available in natrual tinder. Like, would dry fir needles ignite more
easily than dry fiber?

You're right, Robert, the more I think of it the more I believe there
has to
be some kind of vapor in the cylinder. You have to be able to compress
whatever ignites and fine wood shavings or dried grass won't do that. I
bet
they add something like some sort of vegitable oil or something that
vaporizes.
