I watched Tom and John (his father in law) make several striking
hammers.
John kneeled held the drift over the swage block with two hands and Tom
wailed with a sledge hammer. When one more hit was required John said
one and Tom stuck one more time and then off to the air hammer. The
drift/mandrel was then taken out and John cooled it while Tom put the
hammer back in the fire and grabbed the next only to start over again.

Tom won the "drawing-out" competition @ Madison last year against much
younger men. It appeared to be as much technique as anything else. He's
also dead-on with a big two-handed sludge hammer. He drifted the eye in
a hand hammer while Amanda was holding the drift with her hands. I told
her, "Girl, ur crazy". She said, "I trust Tom".....She still has her
hands- and her head.
