Yeah, the anvil was completely preheated to 375 degrees in some oven that a
car mechanics shop donated to the school. After welding I put the anvil back
in the forge and left it over night (it was still to warm to the rest your
hand on 20 hours later) The cracks formed almost immediately though. you
could see the cracks within a few minutes and i'm not sure how deep they
are.. after welding the first time i used a 7 inch grinder to remove all the
bumps and even everything out pretty close and then used our bridgeport with
a fly cutter to make everything absolutely level (except the revealed low
spots which the Stoody was supposed to fill). I did everything the same with
the Ranite rod and it didn't crack so maybe I just got lucky the first time.
I guess my dilemna now is to spend the money and get it ground down the
quarter inch over the whole anvil, wait until school starts and get back to
work grinding and cutting which will also mean welding some more, or just
settle my losses and sell the anvil to a guy in town who said he'd buy it
for 350. I've only put 300 and some sweat into it so far but would really
like the mass under my hammer. Not to mention a good part of me wants
to finish the darned thing just to keep my chin up.

Well Matt wasn't home when I called on Monday so I'll have to wait until
after Creation (huge concert) before I call again and get those temp.
