Thanks to all of you for your advice,
Our foreign exchange students are cooking Japanese food for us at my friends
house tomorrow, and we can call his uncle to ask some specifics about the
heat ratings for the refractories and other such necessities. Once that has
been sorted out I'll be sure to update you all with how the forge is going
and any other questions I have.
I recently posted about refacing my 230# Hay Budden and so here's my update
on that:
the first pass with the Ranite rod was excellent. It layed down very nicely
and did not take very much grinding. We ran out of rod and ordered a Stoody
hardfacing rod that the guys at Central said was the same as the Ranite I
had used but well... it wasn't. It cooled much faster and hairline cracks
formed everywhere. The second welding session was altogether sad not only
because of the rod but my teacher just did a crappy job welding it. I don't
know exactly what he was thinking but I can weld a whole lot better than he
did this time and when school starts again I might just weld it myself. I
wanted to get the surface Fly-ground down almost a quarter inch but do not
know if I will do this yet. I can't find any shops with a fly grinder and
the local machinists don't know of anyone who could/would do the work around
here.
Although my anvil will either be a little shorter or perhaps even a little
taller when I'm done I'm looking forward to getting it done!
I'll keep ya'll posted,
God Bless.
Luke
