I live in Tallahassee and my wife runs Barking Crow Soap so we use lots of 
lye (NaOH) which we get in 50 lb bags at a local chemial suppy house.  They 
don't know what you want if you ask for lye, but have 50 lb bags of sodium 
hydroxide for as I remember $35 or so.   I keep expecting the meth squad to 
follow me home, but they haven't yet.  They also carry nitric acid which I 
wanted some of a while back for some passivation.  The cost which I don't 
remember was reasonable but I was stopped by the $200 deposit on the 
stainless container that its shipped in.   You might try to find out from a 
similar concern who they sell to and see if you could buy a bit from them.
