It stinks alright. Like you say it's usually in the
fairly early stages, unfortunatley that time it was
Lindsey's last full day at the forge with me and we
couldn't start over. On the up side most of the
grinding was finished and she found someone down south
with a square wheel to finish up with.
Material wasn't a factor, I'm on good terms with both
spring shops in Anchorage and scrounging the rems isn't
a problem. Time was the problem, she didn't get in
touch with me till only a few weeks before she had to
move along, I had less than 40 hrs. with her at the
forge. A good 12 of that she spent at the belt grinder
working on her knife. For someone with zero metal
working experience I've never seen anyone pick up
smithing faster.
It's funny, virtually every under 25 student I've taken
has wanted to make a sword, except Lindsey and she's
the only one to make a blade more complicated than a
cold chisel under my tutelege. She's also the only gal
I've taught, only one to show actually. I've been
approached by a few gals but she's the only one to show
up. The ratio seems to be the same for either sex
though, only about one actually shows for every dozen
or so who say they will.
I'm not complaining about the noshow ratio though, so
far every student I've had the privelege of teaching
has been a joy and an education.
Well, the hot tub's full so I can get back to working
on the shop. Deb took off for the afternoon with a
girlfriend, leaving me in charge so I had to knock off
and NOT flood the deck. <grin>
