Jerry, you can look at a brick chimney forge @:
http://www.blksmth.com/Cthe_blacksmith.htm. You can only see part of it,
but it will give you an idea of the opening and the arrangement of the
firepot etc. If you want, I can send you a picture of another brick forge
chimney that I designed, but you'll need to e-mail me offline to get the
picture. Both of these chimneys work exceptionally well and were patterned
off of 2 plans were found in old "Anvil Ring" magazines. My (above) chimney
is 34 ft. high and the inside above the smoke shelf has a 12" square tile
flue liner (I'm in a wood building in the city). The other one is 16 ft.
high and doesn't have a tile flue liner (not in the city and in a metal
building). One key component is the configuration of the bricks at the
opening - 15" wide opening next to the firepot and 11" wide opening in the
bricks on the side away from the firepot. Both of these have smoke shelves,
but I doubt if that is really necessary as I've looked at several brick
forge chimneys that didn't have the shelves and they all worked well (with
or without).

When you say brick, I assume you mean a brick base with standard
cast iron fire pot. I built mine in 1988. It took less than 300 regular
brick and about 20 +/- hard fire brick. The fire brick are not really
necessary. I used them on the top to cover the 1/4" plate that holds the
fire pot. They give me a deeper fire and a flat surface to lay hot things on
without danger. It also provides a place to rake the fire apart and a place
to let the coal go out until next time. I also put a coal storage hopper
inside the hollow space on one end.

Has anyone out there built or has workable plans for a brick type of forge,
I was reading about them in a couple of books and saw one in England in use.

I was just wondering because I have the space, the time and some extra money
to build something like this.
