Folks can anyone suggest the way to select fuel for a forge?

I have read various trade and brand names but none of those that I have read
are available in the UK so I am looking a way to select a fuel from samples.
What are the things to watch for both good and bad? Which fuels to avoid at
all costs? Is it worth making your own coke?
