Roger and John, 

The 3 days to build the Ray Clontz hammer may be a bit short according to
Clay. We plan to have most of the metal cut to specs and the small parts
ready to assemble prior to Clay's arrival at the shop. It will probably
still take all of the 3 days.

You could probably get away with welding the jack hammer bit if you pre &
post heat. You will need to weld a thick top plate as I think it would be
hard to drill & tap a jack hammer bit.

You won't be happy with a tube for the anvil because unless it is very thick
wall it will deform.  Weld a plate on top of really thick tubing and it will
be much better.

We used a cherry picker (engine hoist) to get Clay's out of his truck at the
Madison conference last May with no problem.

A picture of the original one is at anvilfire.com then look under the
North Carolina hammer.  This was the original and Clay Spencer has made
some changes and is doing build classes which I think last 3 days.  The
big bottle neck at the class is welding as the frame and arms are all
welded out of mild steel.  I filmed the use of the hammer but it doesn't
show how the hammer was fabricated.  

Class cost has been averaging $1000 each but there is 700# of steel and
a 1 HP electric motor
The one he had at Alabama he sold for $1995 already made.

The one I saw had 5" square tube for the frame and guide for the hammer
The hammer its self was 4" tube with an inch plate welded to the bottom
for the dies to bolt to.  The bearing surface between the guide and
hammer were ---- (letters) plastic sheet from MSC.  High density or
something.  I need to look at the video I made to be sure.
The anvil was 3' or 6" round shaft.  Clay said it needs to be at least
6" round or square solid.  I may try to make a demo hammer with the
anvil made of tube so it is easier to get it in/out of the mini van.  As
I am cheap and have a pile of pipe sitting around I may use pipe for the
frame instead of tube.

I got a 34" piece of 6" jack hammer bit out of a large dumpster a couple
of weeks ago.  No power was available so I used plank and a come along
to ramp it up and then down into the pickup.  Not sure how the
jackhammer bit will weld.  I think it would be S7 or something similar.
It went on a track hoe and they broke granite with it.

A while back there was a discussion here about a user built mechanical
power hammer that used a car tire as the fly wheel. I thought that I
saved the information but cannot find it, can anyone jog my memory as to
the web site that had information about the hammer and how to build it.
