Actually I think they flicker 120 times per second, for what it's worth.

Fluorescents give off a bit of UV - apparently enough to darken your photo grays.   They actually generate UV as the first thing, then the coating on the bulb absorbs this and gives off visible light instead.  Apparently some of the UV gets through the doating and the glass.  Thicker glass would reduce the UV.

It seems that the fluorescents are actually off sixty times a second. 
You can't comprehend it , but you do see it.

For some reason fluorescents also seem to darken my photo gray glasses.
