Thanks again all. Clay Spencer called me just now and we chatted quite a
while. He's really a nice guy. He's got himself pretty much booked up for
the spring and summer it seems, but he is finding time to work on the plans
to the spare tire hammer. He indicated that it would still be several weeks
away before he had anything printable however. I had blindly sent him some
money last week thinking he may have something on paper already, but he said
today that it's still in his head.
Anyway, looks like things are happening with it. You've given me some great
info and measurements, enough in fact that I think I can get started on
mine.
Robert

The motor is 1 hp. The crank plate is reinforced 1/4"plate welded to the rim
w/ an access hole cut in it. The counter weight is 10 lbs of lead. Also,
enough lead to fill the ram to = 50 lbs. Get some extra lug nuts and be sure
the tire is new, w/ no dry rot, etc. Get a guarantee from the junk yard and
be damn sure the tire fits the hub. Historically, their personnel don't know
& don't care.

The main components the way I remember are:
1/2 of rear axel and spindle, hub ect from a 1987/88/89 plymouth van and
a donut spare tire to fit that hub. Was told it needed to have 5
triangles stamped on rim as the rim needed to be put on backwards
36" of 6" round or Square solid shaft
Enough tube or pipe to make the frame. The one I saw used 5" square
tube and the center of the tire was 70" from the floor
18" of 5" square tube to make the hammer guide
Some 4" square tube to make the hammer head with a piece to weld in one
end to plug the tube and allow the dies to be bolted to. Enough lead to
make it weigh 50#
High density plastic sheet to line the hammer guides.
One 1" pillow block and bearing
1725 electric motor
Piece of plate for the base and to weld to the rim to make the crank
plate
Misc bar stock to make the toggle arms, motor mount ect
Welder to fabricate.

Ok, thanks Ron. Looks like I'll have to wait then. If anyone knows
what
parts will be used on it for sure (base, uprights, anvil, etc) maybe I
could
start collecting those items. Someone will surely offer a set of plans
eventually to ABANA to be resold to the members, or Mr. Spencer will.
To
me, this is the biggest thing to hit the home blacksmith in ages.
Here's
something that's apparently very easy to build, very easy to obtain
parts
for, and a better power hammer than a 50 LB Little Giant. The $1,000 to
build one could possible be reduced depending on the scrounge ability of
the
builder. Eventually someone will have complete kits probably. I'm
pretty
excited about it, plus I'm also getting set to start on a air hammer.
