You got that weight right.  
I figure 10# for a 1"x1"x36" piece (36 cubic inches), so that's the same as 20# for a 2"x3"x12" piece (72 cubic inches).

I used 4 pieces of 2"x3" bar arranged in a square. This left a 1" 
square hole in the middle (handy!).

I bought it new and it wasn't cheap but it was easier to handle a 
2"x3"x36" bar than a 6" diameter bar. The 2"x3" weighs 20lbs per ft. if 
I remember right. I think Clay Spencer mentioned this in his treadle 
hammer plans.
