I don't know how they work either Mike but I bought one a couple years ago
as the ball mice tended to wear out pretty quick. This is a dusty
environment around here, lots of glacier dust year round.
Anyway, it has a bright red light, a sensor and doesn't much care what
surface I use it on. I can hold it about 1/8" off a black surface and maybe
1/16" off a white surface and it works fine. I'll play around with it and
see if there is a color it really likes, maybe red or green and let you
know.
What I really like about it so far is it's total insensitivity to dust, cat
hairs and other bits of litter I run it over. No ball skip, juddering or
other mechanical hinky jinky "noise" my ball mice seemed to pick up.
