Dick,
O.K., I don't like promoting my book, but enough of you have asked that I
also can't not answer the question, so I will do so in the form of a neutral
survey:

(1) There are loads of sites on the Net, through blacksmith groups, foundry
groups, and hot glass groups, where you can find information on how to build
gas burners. They fall into two main categories: Fan blown, and naturally
aspirated. There are a very few people interested in compressed air driven
burners, but I can assure you they are only worth the effort (since no one
has written a book showing us how) if you want the ability to manipulate
flame shape in the extreme. Is this a handy thing to do? Only for torch
work.

(2) Of the recent designs in home built gas burners, almost all of them can
be found either on Ron Reil's forge site, or referred to from his site--even
some fan blown burners. You can't find my burners there.

(3) Tube burners, referred to by some as Mikey burners, can be found in the
book Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces, & Kilns at Skipjack Press, or
Amazon.com (it is never on sale at Skipjack so...) You can also ask a local
smith, if he's already built one, for help.

(4) Hybrid burners, which are referred to on Reil's site, can only be found
by purchasing one from Rex Price, although plans for a very similar burner
can be found on an Australian caster's site, which itself can be found by
looking through casting news groups. I have forgotten his name, but someone
here may remember it. Come to think of it, his web site is also referred to
in the casting section of Reil's site, or was anyway.

(5) There are also wasp-waist burners available through ceramic supply
stores, but they are quite frankly pathetic.

There you are; end of survey. Of course, in my opinion Mikey burners burn
best, but what mother ever thought her own child was ugly? I have been
called "you mother" on numerous occasions, and so should qualify as one,
metaphorically at least :)
Mike P.
