	Well, people wanted to flee the cities, and that's just what they did. 
  Henry Ford enabled it.

	Material reality will probably make your statement so, in time.  I'd 
recommend going back to the horse, but could you even begin to imagine 
what this nation would be like with, say, 200 MILLION horses being used 
as transportation?  The manure management issues alone would be 
staggering, not to mention feed.  OTOH, whole new markets would open up 
and the pace of life would be forced to slow.  Not a bad side effect, 
IMO.  Imagine leaving the rest of the world BEHIND to rot in their 
filth.  Ah well...
