[TheForge] Flatter vs. set hammer

Set hammers are most often used at my place to make decorative corners on
flat things like wall brackets and switch plates.
I just use it to smoosh out the corner...place a corner of the set hammer on
the corner of the plate, flat on the anvil, and strike it a few times. Makes
a nice flattened, spread corner to put a screw hole in.

On the subject of cutting on the anvil, I've also done this a lot using a
vice: mark your cut, clamp it in the vice so that the cut line is just above
and parallel to the jaws, and at a low red to black heat shear it off with a
sharp chisel, cutting horizontally. Works surprisingly well, using the same
principle described.
