OK, thanks, Grant. Have a friend who earns his living by sharpening
blades. He's sympathetic to this odd pastime of ours, and he's been
collecting odd bits of used steel for me ;-) Figure it makes sense to
practice with scrap, and understand the characteristics of various
steels, before you go out and buy them.
