[TheForge] forging tools from automotive coil springs

I had a length of coil spring break in two in the forge.  It didn't burn (no sparks), just seem to fracture at a hot spot.  (this occurred more than once).  What happened?   It's a relatively new automotive coil spring and I vaguely remember someone talking about the metal composition of new springs are not good material to forge.  Is this what I encountered?
