[TheForge] Computers

I still have a DOS computer on my home network. It can run programs that Win
XP won't let me run. I also have Ventura Publisher on that machine and a
voice mail program and card that I have not been able to find a replacement
for.
My first computer was an Osborne. It had 64K of memory, a single sided 5
1/4" 180K floppy and a 7" green monitor. Then I got an Osborne Executive. It
had 128K of memory, two single sided 5 1/4" 180K floppies and a 7" green
monitor. It had WordStar, SuperCalc and Dbase all with no hard drive. The
operating system was CPM, the code that Gates/IBM stole and used to make
DOS.

I still use DOS occasionally, and also a couple of programs I wrote in BASIC
back in the 80's. And you had a Commodore 64 ... lucky you! I had the
TI-99 ... 16K RAM and no floppy disk drive (had to use a cassette recorder
to save data). I really wanted the TRS-80, but could not afford it at the
time. Ah, those early days of computer technology.

I kind of liked the days of DOS, the programmers had to
be really careful how much memory they used and things
ran so much more smoothly. I liked Basic too. maybe
I'll break out my Commodore 64 for old times sake.
<grin>

Glad you got to see the video. Did you check out the
"ring welding" video? Makes me glad electric welding is
pretty well perfected. <grin>
