Hi Frosty -
You said 3 phase is a lot of money, but you can make a very simple
rotary phase converter. Made from an old 3 phase motor that you rope start,
it will provide the 3 phase for a smaller motor. I have a 1 hp motor on my
lathe and it is 3 phase. I got a 3 hp 3 phase motor given to me and I rope
start it, it jsut sits there idling, not using hardly any electricity, and
providing the 3 phase to run the lathe. Works really well. It seems older
3 phase motors are really cheap and sometimes given away. As long as you
don't try to run a motor over about 2/3 the size of your idler, it should
work fine. Later if you want to, you can add capacitors, and electronics to
make it a full converter that wouldn't require rope start.
If you wish I can post my wiring diagram of my system.
