[TheForge] OT Question on Photo-Display Software

The article is about the Peters Valley Bloomery Smelting Workshop, July
2006. It will probably published (subject to editors whims) in the NJBA
Newsletter to come out in a couple months. A little after that he's
likely to post it on the website, which is accessible through
AnvilFire.
The article is as complete as I can make it right now, but I'm hoping
for some addtional photos, as the one photographer missed some critical
points in the job.

You might want to ask him if he can handle it. A few years ago when
all I
had was a 1GB disk I managed to fill it up to a point where if someone
sent
me a a huge file, my system would just lock up. Anyone that has a
system
less than 8 years old should have the capasity, and if he is doing
desktop
publishing he probably has a good system.
A few weeks ago I sent an E-Mail and got a message back that said that
their
mail box was full, but not to resend, they would try to deliver it for
5
days before dumping it. It went through 3 days later when he got home
from
vacation and checked his mail.
Good luck with your article, what newsletter will it come out in?
I'll
watch for it.

This was freaky. Yesterday I tried sending one photo at full
resolution
- BIG - >2MB. Yahoo mail gave me an error message. But Larry say he
received it! I don't know WHAT happened.
Aside from having to transmit a number of photos, I'm concerned
whether
he can handle them (available storage) on his end. But that's his
problem, I suppose.

If you have the lead time, sending a CD would be best. Publishers
want
300
dpi to get the best results. Lower than that and the quality drops.
I've had people send me photos that they have already worked on, and
there
isn't much I can do to fix the damage. If you send an altered
picture,
also
include the original. Your editor probably has the software and
experiance
to get a better result.

That's assuming I can GET them to him in high resolution. As it
stands,
I'd probably have to mail him the disk to do that.

Bruce,
You should leave them high resolution. Your editor needs all the bits
that
he can get when he publishes your article. If he decides to crop,
zoom, or
otherwise enhance the pictures he can only go as far as the resolution
will
let him, don't tie his hands.

So, my current problems are over. I downloaded Irfanview. I can't
speak to it's other features, but the thumbnail feature is great. You
can choose what size you want displayed, and display an entire
directory
at once. Somehow it knows whether to orient the photos portrait or
landscape.
Progress on the article is rapid.
I may even try resizing the photos and including them in the document,
directly. But that's for later.
