So, my current problems are over. I downloaded Irfanview. I can't
speak to it's other features, but the thumbnail feature is great. You
can choose what size you want displayed, and display an entire directory
at once. Somehow it knows whether to orient the photos portrait or
landscape.
Progress on the article is rapid.
I may even try resizing the photos and including them in the document,
directly. But that's for later.

Its a small, fast picture viewer with a good thumbnail option, basic
editing capabilities, and a batch file converter. I have not used the
batch converter but I think it will do what you want. Did I mention
ITS FREE? One of the best picture viewers available.
