Ries,
Neat idea on the variac. Wire wheels can be tricky. If you have anything to
add on the subject, I think it would be valuable to people here.

Good idea Pete, I've also put foot switches (found at local flea market for
$1) on the grinders. That works well. Also the addition of a Vari-arc
makes a world of difference in a wire wheel and how many close calls you get
especially on thin stock.

I ended up cutting out the switch assembly with a cutting disk
and epoxying in a salvaged one from something else. 4 years later
it's still working. I drop it now and then to keep it disciplined..PF
