[TheForge] Preheat your anvil

Robert, your welcome....... I just sent a post pretty similar to the
suggestions I'd made to Robert on his repairs(my last e-mail). I've never
done the slow cool down after doing a repair and have never had a problem
with it. I've done about 12 anvils now- with no regrets to the way I've
repaired them. I've only done one with the track build up rod - and the
extra days work grinding and the discolor of the patched surfaces was
something I was displeased with. You can certainly choose which way to go -
as with anything there are many ways to approach a repair.

If you intend to go with the track build up rods and multi pass hardfacing
rods - be sure to read the article Rob Gunther wrote on the subject - it is
VERY informative and well written. I'm not sure where that is posted (anvil
fire or an ABANA affiliate site - but someone posted it to the list a while
ago).

Ralph

My PW weighs 497. Ralph Sproul suggested that I pre-heat to 200-300 before
starting to weld, which I did using Oxygen/Acetylene torch. Took about 30
minutes to get to 300. I used an digital temp meter to monitor the temp.
After I finished welding, I placed a plywood box around the anvil (it was on
the floor, and the plywood box had no bottom.) I then poured all of the
vermiculite I had into the box, and covered that with kaowool. The next
day, I vacuumed the vermiculite out of the box so I could reuse it again,
and that anvil was still around 180 or so.
It came out really nice. The grinding is rough on someone like me, but you
get used to it. I think I ground on that anvil for over 12 hours off and
on. It came out beautiful! Thanks Ralph.
