Mikey,
First, a disclaimer. I'm not a metalurgist and I've never cast iron.
I have only read about cast iron and iron casting.
That said, no, reheating and cooling would in no way compare to using a
chill in the mold. The idea of a chill is that the crystallization from
the molten iron is different at a chill than elsewhere. And THAT's
about the only positive statement I can make about it.
My suggestion is polish up the face of the Chinese ASO and give it a
go. If it's not hard enough to be useful, BRAZE a plate to the
surface.

Bruce,
Reheating a very small junk anvil and cooling the face won't work?
That's
OK. I've already suggested the idea of pouring them to Cameron Mckeown.
He's
got a lot of friends Down Under who like an excuse to pour copious
amounts
of iron from their oil-fired cupola furnaces; a perfect opportunity to
"do
it from scratch." Heck, we've even got some local boys who might want
to
have a go at it (somebody told me Marshal lives on Vashon):

Mikey,
I believe that refers to the casting process. IIRC (from
book-larnin'), a heavy metal plate would be used as the "face" part of
the casting mold. When the molten iron was poured into the mold, it
would not adhere to this plate, but would be cooled faster by it than
it
would be by casting sand. This changes the metal in desirable ways -
but I'm no metalurgist, so I won't try to explain why.

Cast iron can be very hard, but I don't understand the term "chilled
face."
Could you please explain it?
Mikey
