Well, a spiral can't have the same spacing, but I'm assuming you meant a
spiral other than a classic Archimedes spiral (worked up from the golden
mean and thought to be the most natural looking) vs. other geometric
spiraling shapes, which I have even seen done as ovals.

That's a pretty good rule of thumb, and probably as close to a solid
definition as is possible with art.
