Thanks, all, for the numerous pointers and bits of info! I guess as
soon as I'm done with this tedious project (for which I need the
Beverly frequently) and I get a little more slack. I'll take the
knives out and have a closer look, decide what route to go.
BTW, this weekend at (what I think is) the best country fair in the
province, the Maritime Blacksmiths set up a demo area in conjunction
with the NS Antique Engine & Tractor Club. The engine guys have all
these old single-bangers and steam engines [1] hissing, putting and
banging away, some of them driving old balers, saws, dowel cutters,
pumps etc. They gave us a corner and we had three forging stations
and half a dozen smiths hammering away. The fair-going public seemed
to like it and it's a good fit with the old engines and farm gear.
>From one of the engine guys I got a pointer to a junk dealer who has a
Peter Wright sitting out in his yard. Looks to be around 400#, welded
fast to a ca. 1 foot cube of iron. That puts the whole thing about
800#. Yow! But nobody home late on a Saturday. I guess it's safe
enough sitting there, though. Yer garden variety scumbag isn't going
to grab it and toss it into his old van. :-)

[1] But no steam, just compressed air. Sad but way safer.
